Big Rig EV Trucking Brand Nikola Bows Out

Writer: R.L.R.L.

Nikola Corporation, the electric and hydrogen-powered truck manufacturer, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as of February 19, 2025. The company experienced predictable financial losses amid the legal controversies surrounding the founder Trevor Milton.

The company plans to sell its assets and with approximately $47 million in available cash, oversee a reduced service of existing customers for a few months.

Founder Trevor Milton was convicted of fraud for lying to investors about the company's unproven technology, which significantly impacted investor confidence. One such reveal showed a truck presumably running down hill under its own electric power, however, the demonstration for investors was revealed to be a stunt.

The electric vehicle (EV) industry, like any new start up, is hindered with high production costs, and a gamble on governmental subsidies. The new Trump administration is retracting the unreasonable mandates of net zero emissions in the trucking industry inked in California and spreading across the nation. The previous Biden administrations subsidies aligned with a lofty goal to move away from oil drove much of the EV Trucking market entries.

The collapse of Nikola raises concerns regarding EV/hydrogen-powered trucking solutions and profitability, given the significant recharging infrastructure and economic challenges. Perhaps Nikola was ahead of their time. Will another EV or Hydrogen trucking company emerge? Time will tell.
